Instead, for his noble efforts, America branded him a troublemaker and unleashed the FBI on him. Ample footages of Lennon in interviews giving spitfire, witty comebacks coupled with his unbeatable songs turn this documentary into gold.

The Pursuit of Happyness

Genre - Biography/Drama

Will Smith's acting career has oftentimes been overshadowed by action hero roles that hardly challenge his skills as an actor. With this dramatic film however, Smith practically unleashed something in him that screams, "I Am Actor". Based on actual events, the story has him near the edge of financial deprivation and it is with sheer determination and the love of his child that he has the will to pull through. Destitute and with little hope, a tale of a real hero made of blood and bones emerges.

John Woo's 'Red Cliff 2' Trailer

In 208 A.D., in the final days of the Han Dynasty, shrewd PRIME MINISTER CAO CAO convinced the fickle EMPEROR HAN the only way to unite all of China was to declare war on the kingdoms of Xu in the west and East Wu in the south. Thus began a military campaign of unprecedented scale, led by the Prime Minister, himself. Left with no other hope for survival, the kingdoms of Xu and East Wu formed an unlikely alliance. Numerous battles of strength and wit ensued, both on land and on water, eventually culminating in the battle of Red Cliff. During the battle, two thousand ships were burned, and the course of Chinese history was changed forever.

'Red Cliff 2' is scheduled for theatrical release across Asia starting in January.

Sunset Boulevard

Director - Billy Wilder

Genre - Drama/Romance

Billy Wilder's sardonic mauling of youth-obsessed Hollywood with the infamous line, "I'm ready for my close-up now, Mr. DeMille". The acid-tongued script takes ahold of you right from the get-go and by the time you realize that you've stumbled onto a piece of cinematic history more precious than any of the hokey artefacts Indy Jones risks life and limb for, you're already helplessly undone by its wily, serpentine plot. William Holden is a down on his luck screenwriter hired by aging and diminished silent star, Norma Desmond to play script doctor and so much more.

Dazed and Confused

Director - Richard Linklater

Genre - Comedy/Drama

Relive your teenage years of acne-ravaged embarrassment, first love and painful harassment by moronic bullies in this Linklater classic. The film jumps right into the lives of high school kids eager to have some wild time when classes finish for the year. Like a rock rolling on a steep road, it just never lets up and the fluidity in which Linklater plans everything is amazing. It reminds us of 'Slacker' but elaborated and taken to a bigger arena. No 'Columbine-style' shootings or skinheads here. Just good ol' fun before AK47s and hand grenades entered the hallways of education.

Genre - Comedy/Drama

Eric Khoo is one of the more interesting independent directors from Singapore. His films have a certain down to earth allure that speaks to average folks. In short, it is the exact opposite of Wes Anderson's precious creations which may only delight the upper class. The harsh lives of various inhabitants living in a congested high-rise apartment building are explored in bleak, realistic fashion here. Unfortunately, it is quite preachy at times. The lead actress is one scrumptious morsel though.

Fallen Angels

Director - Wong Kar Wai

Genre - Drama

This is perhaps Wong Kar Wai's least meaningful film. The stylistic strokes here are almost too overbearing, Wong seemingly giving stalwart cinematographer Christopher Doyle permission to go wild. Two assassins for hire played by Leon Lai and Michelle Reis navigate the slums of Hong Kong, with Reis's character secretly falling for her stone-faced colleague. Salaciously shot scene of bodacious babe Reis 'servicing' herself aside, this is a film where the camerawork has run rampant, shoving the already lightweight script mercilessly to the kerb.

Director - Vincent Paronnaud &
Marjane Satrapi

Genre - Animation/Biography/Drama/War

An account of life in Iran through the eyes of a precocious girl who fought for freedom all through her restricted, devalued existence as a female in a male-dominated country. The filmmakers here have taken the animated genre and turned it into a noir-ish, 'documentary in drawn form' mixture which took us by surprise. Its powerful, potent story with sprinklings of hilarity and poignancy resonate well over the 2D form it is in, reaching and capturing our hearts with cinematic splendor.
